Learn how Panelhome makes building easy

Our step-by-step process takes you from design and engineering to flat-pack panel delivery and quick on-site assembly. See how we ensure a smooth build for your new home.

Benefits of Custom with Panelhome

Choosing a custom design with us means you don’t sacrifice speed or quality. Traditional custom builds often take longer due to their uniqueness – but since we prefabricate your custom elements, you still get a quick assembly on site. Moreover, you avoid the pitfall of “bespoke = very expensive” because our efficient construction method helps control costs. Your home will be one-of-a-kind, but it won’t break the bank or timeline like one-off projects sometimes do.

You also gain a partner deeply invested in your satisfaction. We thrive on creating custom solutions – it challenges us in the best way and results in truly happy homeowners living in their dream spaces. If you have a passion project, we share that passion and will pour our expertise into making it happen.

Frequently asked questions

Is a custom Panelhome more expensive than a standard design?

It can be, but not always. It really depends on the design itself. We don’t charge a premium just for being “custom” – you pay for the materials and the engineering time, similar to any project. If your custom design is large or complex, naturally it could cost more than a simple small standard design. However, compared to a custom home built conventionally, a custom Panelhome often ends up more cost-effective due to the efficiencies in building. We will give you an honest estimate early on. If budget is a concern, we can suggest ways to simplify certain aspects while retaining the overall concept. There’s a good chance we can tailor something to meet both your vision and budget.

I’m not a designer – can Panelhome do the design for me?

Yes. We have design capabilities and also work with independent architects/designers who are familiar with our system. If you come to us without a finalised plan, we can handle the design process start to finish. We’ll ask a lot of questions about your needs, style preferences, block of land, and so on, and then craft a custom design for you. You’ll be involved in feedback and approval at each stage. This is a collaborative process, much like working with a traditional architect, but with the benefit that the designer is thinking about panel construction from the get-go (so you won’t need things redrawn later for panels). There may be a design fee associated, which we’d outline, but we often roll much of the design/engineering service into the overall kit price for a seamless package.

Are there any design limits with the Panelhome system?

While we like to say “no limits,” there are practical parameters. For example, panel dimensions: transporting panels wider than about 1200mm or taller than 3m can be challenging, so very large sections might be made in multiple pieces and joined on site. Very high ceilings or multi-storey structures will need additional engineering (we might introduce some posts or beams). Curved shapes can be done but sometimes with more cutting waste or sub-framing. Essentially, any extreme design element can usually be accommodated, but we will explain the implications (cost, extra structure, etc.). In most cases, we find a way to achieve the look or function desired. If something truly can’t be done with panels alone (say a free-form organic curve structure), we might incorporate other materials in tandem. But those cases are rare – SIPs are quite versatile.

Can I mix traditional building with Panelhome panels in my design?

Certainly. Hybrid designs are possible. For instance, you might want a feature stone wall in the middle of the house, or a timber post-and-beam porch at the front – those can be integrated. You might even do a masonry ground floor and panel second floor, or any combination like that. We’ll focus on the parts of the structure that make sense to do with SIPs, and we can coordinate with other elements. Some customers use our panels for the main structure but still have a conventional truss roof because they wanted a particular ceiling style – that’s okay too. We’re not all-or-nothing; our goal is your happiness with the finished home. Just keep in mind that adding more traditional elements could reintroduce some construction time or complexity, but sometimes it’s worth it for the design you want.

How long does a custom design process take with Panelhome?

It varies with complexity, but generally: initial concept to final plans ready for approval might take a few weeks to a couple of months. We try to be efficient – our team knows you’re eager to get building. For example, a relatively straightforward custom tweak (like modifying one of our example plans) could be turned around in days. A completely fresh design with multiple revisions may take a bit longer. We’ll provide a timeframe when we start. The fabrication lead time after design approval is similar to other projects (4-6 weeks typically). So, you could start talking to us today and have panels delivered in just a few months for a custom home – which is quite fast in the custom home world!
